THE ROLE OF IDENTITY IN LEADERSHIP (BILA Cohort 2 workshop recap)

THE ROLE OF IDENTITY IN LEADERSHIP

TWO SOURCES OF IDENTITY

1.Primary source (You are: God’s creation ,God’s Image & God’s Ambassador)

2.Secondary source (You are : Qualifications acqured ,choices made ,mentorship received & naratives entertained )

N/B Primary source is you True Identity .

Think of leadership as a ship navigating the ocean.

Your primary identity is the anchor, while your secondary identity is the sail.

Your primary identity reminds you that you are God's creation, made in His image and called to represent Him. It keeps you grounded when leadership storms come—when you face criticism, rejection, failure, opposition, or seasons of uncertainty.

Your secondary identity is shaped by the qualifications you acquire, the choices you make, the mentorship you receive, and the narratives you entertain. These influence your capacity, decisions, growth, and direction as you pursue your vision.

Without the anchor, storms can overwhelm you. Without the sail, you may remain grounded but make little progress towards your destination.

Therefore, identity gives a leader the stability to withstand storms and the capacity to move towards the vision.

Remember, you are becoming what you consistently choose to do. Your identity grounds you, but your daily choices, learning, and actions shape how you grow and lead.

IN CONCLUSION :

Think of leadership as a sailing ship

Identity gives a leader the stability to withstand the storms and the capacity to move towards the vision. A leader who knows who they are is better equipped to navigate the challenges of leadership without losing themselves or abandoning their purpose.
